Long-haired Persian cats were first discovered in the Middle East by an Italian traveler in the early 1600s. They were eventually brought to Europe, and became popular in England during the 19th century. Queen Victoria owned two blue Persians.

Persian cats came to America in the late 1800s. The breed was officially recognized by the Cat Fanciers Association in 1914, and quickly became the most popular cat breed in America. U.S. breeders have their own breed standard for this cat, giving the American Persian a slightly different look among the world’s Persian cats.

The Persian breed is also recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA) and the American Cat Fanciers Association (ACFA).

Take a look around our website for more information on this popular breed. We hope that you'll be convinced enough to want to adopt a rescued kitty. Ask anyone who has adopted a rescued kitty and they'll all tell you that they are every bit as loving and special.

AJ's Best Friends rescues Persians, Himalayans, and other purebreds from anywhere there is a need. We were told about a serious situation in Egypt. As tensions grew in Egypt and the middle East, the animals caught in the middle of that war torn country needed to be removed as fast as possible. We contacted the rescue center in Cairo, Egypt to offer our assistance. So in November 2011 and again in January 2012 we had a total of 12 kitties flown from Cairo, Egypt to us here in Phoenix, AZ. The Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA) worked in extremely difficult circumstances to bring these animals to safety. This was our first International rescue, and surely it won't be the last.

Shafik in the shelter in Egypt

We were shown many photos of the cats in need. One of the photos was of Shafik, a 4yr old male Persian who looked so unhappy. That photo so tugged at our hearts that we asked to have him sent to us.It was a long flight from Cairo to San Francisco, to Las Vegas, to Phoenix. Over 25hrs to be exact. He arrived exhausted, unsure of where he was and what was about to happen next. But he was so sweet. We took him to one of our vets who discovered that he had a hole in the roof of his mouth. He was having a lot of difficulty eating due to the pain. It was decided that he needed to have surgery right away. Well it turned out that he needed three surgeries. Below you see Shafik now that he has gained a little over 4 pounds. His fur is growing out, he is a very happy, playful, loving boy. He jumps like a deer and runs through the house kicking up his heels and sliding into the walls as he rounds a corner. What difference a day makes.
